Post Finding your old truck

When I was 16 I got my first Ford, a 1979 F-150 XLT. I drove that truck every day and every where until I left for college, I took my dad's old work car that got around 40 mph and left the truck in the garage. Well I would see my truck on the holidays and looked forward to graduating so I could get my truck back. About a month before graduation my dad calls me up and tells me he bought a new truck. I said that's great dad and then he gets real quiet, I said "What's up dad?" That's when he tells me he traded in the '79 on this new truck! I couldn't believe it, he had bought the truck new in '79 and given it to me on my 16th birthday and now he trades it in?? I went to the dealership that weekend but the truck was already gone. If I still have the VIN is there anyway I can find this truck again?? It's been about 4 years since I lost it.

Thanks,

Birdawg

Finding your old truck

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-14-03 AT 10:56 AM (EST)]With the new privacy act and such, I really dont think so. Its illegal for anybody to give you any information about someone else. I had to really twist some arms to get info on an abandoned car and its previous owner.

Good Luck

As a side note, you may not want to find it. I found my 77, which was my first rig, had been stripped and cut down into a trailer. I wished i had never found it.

Well I figured as much, I just wasn't sure if any of those lemon check websites would give you any of that type of info. Odds are I probably wouldn't want to find it anyway, that truck was babied for over 20 years and it would kill me to see it torn up, unless I got it back and fixed it up again
Well if anyone sees a Black and Silver '79 on the side of the road let me know and I will bring it home.

I hope you find it but there is a good chance it was sold at a wholesale auction and it's on its way to Apache Junction AZ by now.

I have my dad's 90 F-150 and it would kill me if I lost it or it was stolen. Eveything about my dad (who was killed 2 yrs ago on his motorcycele) is alive in that truck.

God luck to you!

Birdawg - trying running an ad in papers in and around your area.
The "lemmon check" web sites might produce something - you never know it is worth a shot - try this one - http://www.carfax.com/
Also, I assumed you asked at the dealership where it went? Maybe it was bought by one of their mechanics as a project and is stuffed in a garage somewhere - I know a guy that found a vehicle that way once.

Keep it Rubber Side Down!

:-X23 If he gave the truck to you, why did he feel he could get rid of it w/o your permission?

Did he atleast trade it for another Ford?

Finding your old truck

Quad,
I asked the dealership the weekend after it happened, but they said they couldn't tell me that information, I probably scared them with that crazy look in my eyes
Matt,
I still don't know why he thought he should/could trade that truck in, we still don't talk about it The really bad part was that he bought a Tahoe, but traded it in a couple of months later on a new F-150 Ext. Cab.

I look at every one that I see on the highway but I can always tell that it's not mine, maybe I should take out an add.
Thanks for the advice

If your Dad gave you the truck, I believe he is legally liable to pay you the money he got for trading it in.

He actually gave me something like $1000 and his '86 Bronco (I guess he felt a little guilty), but I would have gladly given who ever had my '79 the Bronco and the $1000. Lot of memories in that old truck!
I would trade my '87 F-150 straight across for that old '79 today if I could find it.

I tried searching for my Dad's 1989 Bronco.Did a Carfax search, and found it's currently in the state of Colorado.I then contacted the Colorado DMV,and explained the story, and asked if they could give info on it's current owner(s),and they said that info could only be given if you were from a law enforcement agency requesting it.
