I have a 98 F-150 4wd. When pulling my horse trailer, and turning from a stop, I get a bad vibration. My mechanic seems to be sure it is in the drivetrain. They are replacing all the u-joints now and said if that doesn't fix it he will need to probably replace the pinion gears in the rearend. Does this sound like a proper course of action? I have a slightly loose tierod and ball joint on my right side, could this be the problem? I am not very good mechanically so please keep responses in simple terms. Thanks alot.
If you dont have a vibration without the trailer, then chances are its not a u joint. You could check you wheel bearings and I would recomend replacing any worn suspension parts.Does it do it in 4 wheel and 2 wheel or just 4 wheel? Mush
The mechanic rebuilt the drivetrain and no improvement. He seems sure it is the rearend that is going to be at least partially rebuilt. He did recommend to let him put the heavy duty additive in the rearend before spending alot more money. I am still wondering if it couldn't be in my front end. The vibration is still there without the trailer, but not nearly as bad. It only vibrates when the steering wheel is turned in a particular spot, whether I am turning or straightening up and it only happens at about 5-10 mph. Thanks for any replys
I had an 88 Ranger Ext. Cab, 4wd that would turn hard when in 4wd. But everyone I spoke with said that is normal. It would go away as soon as I put it back in 2 wd. Mine was an automatic V6 and it always wanted to jitter on take off from a dead stop, steering wheel turned or not, from the day it was new. Ford dealer would never acknolwedge a problem and it lasted for 125,000 miles until I sold it.. I know it was the tranny, but, never could get a Ford dealer to fess up to a service bulletin or fix it.
Not sure on this. Does it have rack & pinion steering?
Good news, We put two tubes of the Ford additive and the vibration is gone! I even pulled my three horse trailer with three horses in it and after just a few minutes of driving, no vibration.
