Me thinks its time to replace my factory ball joints. the truck is a '96 f250 with 4x4 drive.
For starters, there is a terribly annoying squeak as I turn the wheels. Is this a sign of the ball joints going or could it be something else? I know the factory ones can not be greased (no fittings).
Now assuming I have to replace the ball joints, how hard of a job is it assuming I have all the time in the world. I don't want to pay a mechanic an exorbitant amount of $ to do the labor when I can do it myself. Im not a mechanic but Im also pretty saavy when it comes to mechanical stuff, im just not trained the way a mechanic is. If I pulled all the front end parts apart, can I just bring the control arm or whatever part hold the ball joints to a shop and have them pressed out or do I need some kind of crazy press to get the front end apart? It is 4 wheel drive so im on uncharted territories when it comes to this.
The squeak could be dry/worn ball joints but also could be worn universal joints on the outter ends of the axle shafts. Replacing the ball joints is time consuming and frustrating but not that bad. However don`t assume you need to replace them. with each wheel off the ground give the tyre a good shake and feel for play. If you do decide to do the job do a search of the `87-`96 F forum and you will get plenty of information on tools etc. Hope this helps.
