No Spark Advance

Hey guys, maybe someone here can help. I have an 85 full size Bronco, 300 I-6, manual tranny. I just put a new motor in last year and have been a little dissapointed in it's performance lately. Well, I decided to tinker with it this weekend and see if I could find a problem and I may have. When I was checking the timing I noticed that even after I reconnected the black terminal there at the distributor I still get no timing advance when I rev the engine. It's stuck where you set it. Any ideas here would be appreciated, I think I have an extra module off an old distributor somewhere, I may change it tonight but other than that I'm stumped.

Happy New Year!

Still no suggestions here? Well, how about this, anyone have a good recomendation for an aftermarket ignitions system. Engine is stock, stock intake but I am running a 2bbl motorcraft off a 72 model 302. All the smog stuff is long since gone, and capped off, split exhaust no cat. conv., still factory merged manifold though. I don't really think I will gain much from a high end IGN system but I want to get away from the ECM controlled system that's on it... What do you think would be best... older model stock ford ignition with vaccuum advance or something like a mallory or MSD system?

OK, I'll take a stab at this, though its not from personal experience. I don't think the ECM system is functioning at all in your case. When you screw with those systems, they go into "dumb" mode. Meant to get you home, but no advance or other benefits.

You could go with a fancy MSD programable box and MSD dizzy, but for a LOT less $$ you can find a duraspark II dizzy and box. It will need some sort of vacuum from the carb (not direct from the intake) but your 72 carb will have a port for this. Pull your current whatever its called dizzy and electronics and finish what you started when you started screwing with the electronics and emissions.

I have read a lot about this, havn't done it personally. Good luck.

Thanks, yeah, I'm pretty sure that vacuum port is there, just plugged right now... I just wasn't sure how vaccuum vs electronic advance played out. But right now anything is better than what I got. I'll check into the dura spark and see what I can do there, it would be nice to go aftermarket and heat the whole thing up a bit. I'll keep ya posted, thanks for the info!

There is a connector plug at the distributer (mine is yellow Yours might be black) it goes into a cable with two other wires. This is a shielded cable. There is probably some tape over the end of the shielding where the wires come out. If you pull on the single wire connector too hard you can strip the insulation off the wire where it goes into the shielding and short the wire to the shield or one of the other wires.
Check that out
Also you might try to rock the connector where it connects to the module on the distributer and monitor the timing light at the same time. Mine went bad and I found a new one at rockauto .com. Spliced it in and it made a hugh difference.
