The tailgate on my '92 F-150 won't open. It feels like the left side latch is the one hanging up. The handle also doesn't feel right. It does not have the spring action that it used to have. The problem that I have is that there is a cover over the inside of the tailgate and the cover's screws are covered when the tailgate is closed. There is also a metal cover over the edge with the screws covered. I've tried some gentle and not-so-gentle persusion methods with no success. Any suggestions would be appreciated
So you have an aftermarket inside tailgate cover protecting the inside tailgate? Metal or rubber??
One way or another you're going to have to "break in" through that cover to get to the access panel, then remove that (I think 8 or so Torx head screws).
From there you can manually work the control rods that run from the handle to each latch. Luckily for me I released my stuck tailgate that way, but the right latch kept jamming. I had to disassemble everything and remove and bend one of the tangs on the right latch, the replace the handle with the Help brand from parts store.
I had a simiar problem with my 95. there are two yellow clips that hold the control rods to the handle. One of mine broke and would not release one side. I had to open the back and replace it. give that a check.
