New member, love the site. For about a year I have been getting a grind [sounds the same as if your trying to start truck when already started] on occasional startups, sometimes 2 weeks, sometimes 1 month intervels. I have replaced the starter. My local mechanic cannot figure it out since it only does it randomly. It also has Viper remote starter, could this be the problem, I don't want to cause damage letting this go on till something breaks. 99 F-350, V-10 71,000 miles, original, happy owner
The starter may have to be shimmed away from the ring gear or most likely the ring gear is out of round or damaged....You should examine the ring gear for abnormalities..
I've had the same problem on my 2002 but it only does it when the outside temp is below about 28F. It'll crank normally and when I release the key I get a bit of a grinding noise, as handyman said, like I cranked it again after the engine was already on. Do you think that the oil on the starter shaft isn't fluid enough and doesn't let the gear come away from the flywheel fast enough and "lingers" a little too long in a position that grinds both together? I've never looked at the starter on these trucks, are they centrifuge or fork activated types? BTW, I fixed my problem by selling the 2002 and buying a 2003!!!
The grinding was going on before the starter was changed & I hoped the new one would stop the problem. It probably is the ring gear, I'm sure thats pretty costly to have fixed. How long do you think it will last running it like it is? Will it cause other problems if I just let it go till it breaks? One damaged tooth hopefully will just be an annoyance. How do these things just break without being abused? I really don't think you can check it without ripping it all apart & dropping the tranny.
If the starter stays engaged after starting I don't think a grinding noise will be heard cause the teeth are still engaged. You get a grinding noise when you try to engage the teeth with the ring gear moving...
Also could be a bad or weak solenoid on the starter. It throws the gear into the ring gear...or broken mounts or loose starter.
