I have an '02 2.3 auto and I unplugged the IAT sensor and ran the engine. I noticed the check engine light was on an remembered that i had forgot to plug the sensor back in. I immediately did and restarted the engine but the light still comes on. do I need to reset my vehicles computer, and if so how do I do that?
I belive the code stays in the memory for 40 restarts of the engine.
Or get someone with a scanner to clear out the codes.
Really, anything else is wasting time as the computer needs to keep learning its settings over and over (usually way longer than 2 minutes) and pulling the cables isn't the best thing--those little sparks from putting the cables back in place may eventually kill the computer.
you can clear codes by jumping the "diagnostics" connection under the hood (for manually reading codes with a meter or CEL), turn the ignition on but dont crank, you'll hear the fuel pump, and at that point before the fuel pump runs the second time, pull the jumper. That will clear ALL the KAM.
LaLa, the 02 in referance uses the OBD II system ,the method you described is for an OBD I system,(Pre-94).And Alfred,I think you are refering to DRIVE CYCLES not cel .The codes can be cleared by the unhook method and the IDLE will reset in two minutes, but you are correct ,the DRIVE cycles take alot longer, there is a method to reset them but it is VERY complicated, such as excelerating from 20 to 50 at 3/4 throttle then coasting down to 20 and doing this three times in a row,and there are about 12-14 things like this that have to be done in order.
