Yesterday on my '85 F150, I switched my vent control from floor to vent position. Now it is stuck on the vent position. I took the glove box out and seen the little silver canister only moved when I selected between vent and mix. Beings it was getting dark I was gonna leave it until I had more light on it.
This morning though, I started my pick up and let it idle with the heater on letting it warm up. Came back out of the house and the cab had lots of smoke around the glove box area and now there is an extreme burnt smell. I shut it off for and turned it back on and used it on the way to work and the smoke seems to have disappeared but still stinks like smoke and heat is only blowing out of the vent no matter what position the vent switch is in.
The switch/cable appear to be working as far as I can tell by the movement of the little rod out of the little silver can on the left side of the glove box. I have good air flow and heat.
You need to pull the blower motor out and clean all the leaves and trash in there. It might be the debris in the catching fire. This probably doesn't have anything to do with the switches, but you don't want your ride to catch fire!
Like Neil said, that can happen. There is a blower motor resistor mounted in the airduct that is used to give the different speeds of the motor. There are several different coils on the resistor, and some of them get red hot when the blower is on. Mounting them in the airduct keeps them cool, but a leaf or something can get against them and catch fire for a little bit. Maybe there is some debris caught in one of your air duct doors too.
Yep, I just went out to look at it and the blower motor vent tube external was full of leaves. I'll bet the rest is full of leaves. Guess I'll know what I'll be doing on my New Year's day off!
One more question. I notice that there are a bunch of gaskets for the heater core cover and heater core itself. Do I need to replace most of the gaskets that are going to be removed or are they reusable? NAPA doesn't show any gaskets for all this stuff online.
