My temp control on my 98' F150 is not working properly. In all positions it blows very hot air, with the only exception being when the **** is turned all the way to the left (cold), and I mean all the way! I understand that the air blend door is controlled by vacuum, but I have not found any vacuum leaks under the hood (do I need to check any where behind the dash?). Is there any way to determine if the control is bad other than just replacing it? Any other ideas?
Check the **** itself. They have a tendency to crack, and not turn the shaft of the valve. That is what happened to mine. A new **** solved it.
Pull the ****, and look for the flat part of the shaft; it is D-shaped.
Note the position of the flat in both the hole, and on the shaft.
If the shaft doesn't turn with the ****, you neeed to replace your ****.
Alternately, try turning the shaft with a pair of needle-nosed pliers. If it works that way, you need to replace your ****. Of course, the valve may have hardened enough that you may need to replace it as well.
Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately the **** is working fine (that would just be too easy!). I had tried turning the shaft with a pliers before and the results were the same.
Also, I forgot to mention that my Heater/A/C switch to defrost mode by themselves whenever the engine is working hard (accelerating, climbing hills, etc). Is this related to the temp control problem?
As I recall, there is a bundle that goes into the back of the control itself that switches the mode. I think if you pull off the panel that surrounds the radio and climate control (turn the vents in and pull the panel straight out), you will have access.
my blend door actuator froze up and only blew hot air so i just replaced it while i was doing my heater core, you might want to check that out, its a very cheap part.
