I'm going to post this in the FE and the 61-66 Forum
As it has a bit to do with both of them I think
If your looking to upgrade your alternator to one with a built in regulator, and you don't want to buy brackets to relocate and the expense of a one wire alternator... Here's how I did it.
I had a 91 Ford Tempo 4 cylinder... I wrecked it so I was parting it out.
Out of curiousity I put it on my 66 F-100 with a 390 motor
It bolted up just fine.
It has 4 wires to it...
2 of them have power all the time, one has power with a switch, and the 4th one is a jumper on the alternator (factory)
If your interested in how to make a 2 wire setup with an alternator like this I can post descriptions, or you can email me.
Just trying to help, But I found this very helpful
As it also moved the alternator towards the left of the motor, away from the heat of the motor, and was cheaper than buying a expensive 1 wire GM product, and relocating brackets.
I tried using a regular GM alternator before but it had clearance problems with the heads.
But anyways, to make a long story short... Im very happy with this setup, and if your interested email me or I can post the instructions here.
I used stock FE alt brackets
No bending, no cutting, no fabrication
Bolted right on. I will post a diagram I made of the wiring very shortly.
As for pics of my install. I will do that as soon as I get it out of the garage and back on the road (swapping gears, etc)
Sorry.
No the red wire goes to the battery
The Blue wire comes from a switched source
I ran mine off of my coil.
The Yellow wire is exactly as it says... a jumper
If you look at the alternator there is a single plug and there is a plug with 3.
The jumper goes from the middle one on the triplug to the single one
The Green wire is a jumper also
From the Battery wire, to the wire on the triplug
OKAY! You have an ignition hot (blue). Power wire to the battery (red). The three wire plug and the jumpers are on keyed plugs from the original harness. So you moved some of the original wiring harness. Does this alternator put out power at idle? What is the rated amperage? Do you have a amp gage? Or are you using a charge indicator light? I like toe bolt up with original brackets part. These Ford brackets are a pain in the butt.
Yes, the bolt up to the original FE brackets
If you look at my diagram, run it exactly as I told you to
2 wires TO the alternator
From there its just jumpers, that way you dont have to have a ton of wires going into it.
It charges 14.6 volts at idle
It's 95 amps, Its from an AC car, a non AC car is 65
I have an Autogauge gauge in my truck, and it reads closer to 15 than 14.
It charges really well. I like it
Especially since:
1) Its Internally Regulated
2) Internal Fan
3) 2 wires to run, no confusion
3) ITS STILL A FORD !
