Hey guys, got a stupid question? I have a pretty fresh rebuilt 390 (about 3000 miles on it) and I am starting to see an oil spot in front of the engine where the intake and cylinder heads meet. It's not a runing kind of leak, just a residual type of situation. For all those 'engine-heads' that have rebuilt 1000 engines, should I just clean it off and keep on trucking? Or should I even be worried about it?
Hey, I have to ask these questions, I am a newbie seeking guidance. Thanks. Doc.
P.S. I guess I should give some more information about the engine that would provide for a better look at the situation.
i dont think i would worry about it unless it gets worse, im assuming the intake manifold gasket didnt seal properly and it will prolly get worse and you will have to put a new gasket on, good luck
I agree with fordman Doc. Unless it is getting pretty annoying I would give it an occasional wipe every now and then. The cork gaskets were probably used with the intake. They for a reason unknown to me leak like crazy. I tried several times to get mine to quit but I finally did it right (like edelbrock tells us to) and used a bead of blue RTV instead. No more leak.
Thanks guys, I won't worry about it then. The machinist did use to cork gasket that came with the gasket set. He suggeste I use Permatek on the headers though. Man, they stay tight for a while, then tah, tah, tah, you know the sound I am talking about if you have leaking headers. Thanks again, Rat, when are we going to meet up dude? I would like to salivate over your truck, haha.
I should be spending some time in Belleville this summer. I'll drop you a line. I'll probably have the F-250 instead though. Maybe I will trailer the F-100 out and take it to the Gateway strip.
i have some oil residue with rtv stuff but i not to bad. I have about 4000 miles on my rebuild. I was told that if you have your air cleaner on and punch on your fe when its cold you can blow the cork gaskets right out. But thats what i heard!
rat i am intersted in seeing what your engine looks like now that it has been in for awhile, do you have any recent pictures besides those of the engine before it was installed ?
