If you started digging, would it be like going back in time? Is there layers of paper; a layer could be a week or a month? Do you just give up once in awhile and bulldoze it clean? Don't ask, mine is spotless. Yeah, right.
Well, I too just got a brand new LCD monitor, but I didn't have time to shovel off my desk. It is is full of reciepts, a cell phone, papers, and I think I even saw a palm pilot, and some bullet casings as well.
i used to have my desk in the corner of the living room. BIGmistake, it seemed to be a catch all for everything from the mail to old magazines to the kids toys. i mean it would pile up as high as my monitor and i have a 19inch. So i moved it to the corner of the kitchen. big mistake number two, somehow all the stuff that got left on it in the living room found its way to the kitchen, plus i get all kinds of new stuff from pop cans to empty wrappers, so i moved it to the corner of the dining room. and still now i get stuff stacked on here i never use. right now i got mail , pill bottles 2 digital camaras that are defintly not mine, i dont know where those came from. 6 check books 3 wallets 3 ashtrays a 2 foot high pile of magazines tape combs brushes and a pot of flowers. my cds are all on the floor next to me and the corner table with the printer and scanner are piled high with stuff i didnt even know i owned. plus i got about 800 yu-gi-oh cards sitting on my telescope box next to me. what i need is a maid just for my desk. i can pay her well if i could find out which wallet and checkbook all the money is in. lol

I have a nice rolltop computer desk with a 21" monitor and laser printer on it. It's kept pretty clean and even has some decorative candles and aTiffany-like lamp on it.
My desk is clean! My girl friend accuses me of being **** retentive about keeping things neat but I can always (almost!) find things because I put things away as soon as I am finished with them!
On occasion my girl friend's son uses my computer and desk to do college homework and he sometimes leaves a mess which I have to clean up. He is getting better as I leave subtle hints!
My computer area is also my ham radio/test bench. I have two 6' racks of test equipment behind the desk. Another rack to one side. Another desk on the other side. I am going to build a custom U shaped desk and shelve arrangement so everything will be in easy reach.
Which computer desk? Mine, my wifes or the two networked systems at work? I've got more but they are used for other stuff. I try to keep my home system neat, but the two at work are on a work benche and are cluttered, then there's the one on the commo bench and a couple on the audio/video bench and there are others including the laptop I keep in my truck with programming adapters and such. By the way my wife has a mounting disaster on her desk, I have Adobe 5.0 and any paperwork I want that doesn't have to be hard copy original gets scanned stored in .PDF and backed up onto CD. Adobe even does color and if you have a good scanner and printer they look nearly identical to the original.
my home sytem is pretty neet to snese i just got a new monitor i had to clean it up, before i cleaned it was bad i had to dog for the scanner under all the papers, the printer and speakers are out of the way up on a shelf ont he wall so thats always clean, i found my web cam behind my old monitor, i was amazed all the stuff i found behind my computer.
I used to keep mine pretty clean, but since we just moved into our new house, it looks like a tornado has just blown across it. Paperwork for the old house, paperwork for the new house, work papers - I need a big burning drum....
I've got a Canon USB scanner N1220U I got refurbished for something like 39.95 its great and I got one for work, also the same make. As far as speed it depends on what you are doing, any high res. color will be slow as well as complex grayscale done higher res (higher res=more DPI.). When I do ordinary documents I will usually just use black and white setting at 200 DPI. Then I will store it as a PDF. with Adobe Acrobat, Adobe readers are free downloaded and there is some freeware now that will allow you to convert documents to PDF.s you just don't have the options available with Adobe Acrobat. But it takes no great amount of time to scan them and they are easy to organize and store, they are also easy to fax and e-mail.
