That's hard for me to swallow. K&N filters aren't saturated with such extreme amounts of oil that the oil flies all over the place coating everything with it. Unless, he cleaned the filter and re-oiled it himself and sprayed too much oil on it. Even still, if the oil were to spray a bit onto the MAF, I can't see how that would ruin it. It's just a little oil. I would think that simply cleaning the MAF with contact cleaner would fix the problem.
It does 'fly all over the place' I think it is actually that the MAF is very sensitive to the oil. VERY sensitive. And cleaning it may work but you know then chebbie guys, no good with motors, that is why they have used the same one for 35 years, That way they only need to know one thing. 350 reallly aint a bad motor IMHO, not a bad choice by GM to keep it around taht long,
The oil does come off of the K&N filter in ANY vehicle, not just Chevy's. It just takes a little bit of electrical contact cleaner, a Q-tip, and a steady hand to clean up your MAF sensors. And after the first few hundred miles with the K&N it'd be fine anyways after cleaning - most of the oil would have began to bind up. Recharging it is where most people screw up.
The dealership must have been retarded if they couldn't realize this. Hell they could have taken it in and charged you like 100 bucks just to clean the things off rather than turning you away.. ::shrug::
Also it is a relatively well known fact that the Essex had a major problem with its head gaskets. The 4.2 variant wasn't saved either. You could have just cleaned up the hg failure though...its not *that* hard.
I agree with the recharge comment...people tend to think more oil will filter better and they over do it...and I am sure the dealer realized this...but those guys never wanna clean or recondition something....its always replace...replace...and bill.
