V-10 Low End Torque ?

I'm not happy with the torque at idle rpm's with my 2003 F-250 4x4 with the 5.4l/6spd/4.10's. I was used to trucks that in bulldog gears, one could simply let the clutch out without any gas feed unless taking off on really steep hills with a load. How much better would the V-10/6spd/4.30's do taking off when the truck is in a strain? I've drove a 7.3 psd/6spd/4.10 once and every time I took off on a hill in low it was no problem, just keep the right foot on the brake until the clutch catches and release both together. No sliping at all. I know the psd makes it torque at the low end, but I perfer to stay with a gasser. The local dealers stock either 5.4l or psd's, so I can't test drive the V-10 to judge for myself.

Your comments are appreciated---Fred

Post Torque & HP ratings...

I don't have any practical experiece because my V10 is an auto, but here's the torque ratings as they apppear on paper:

5.4L V8 at 1000 rpms is rated for 280lb-ft & about 140HP
6.8L V10 at 1000 rpms is rated at 360lb-ft & 170HP

I know that won't help you much but it should give you general idea what the power differences are in the two engines since you already know that the 4.30 gears are also going to make a huge difference as well.

Kind of makes you wonder how the trusty old 5.4L would handle your load if you could get 4.30s with it! I'll bet it would make a big difference.

Sorry to highjack the thread but I sure wish Ford woulda given us the 4.10 option with the V10 and the 4.30 with the V8...

With mine it's no problem letting the clutch out in low andstarting out in an idle. It is also good for starting out with a trailer. On level ground I only have to give it minimal throttle to take off pulling about 10,000 pounds. I've never drove the 5.4, but I'm sure the V10 has enough power to notice a difference.

I have a 04' F-350, V-10, 6-speed with the 4.30 LS, DRW, while I have stalled it snow plowing, only a few times, it does very well under load with my trailer behind it on take-offs and all around driving. I very rarely use Low (or 1st), certain areas I can take off in 2nd (3rd) with no trouble at all, and with cap on the back ( 8ft bed), tools in the back its 8000 lbs, and the truck will get up and go,, , will see how good it does after some mods,

I am very happy with my truck and how it handles the work load It has to do almost every day !

Later,,,,,,,,,,Mark

According to the torque curve in one of my Ford brochures for '02, the V10 produces 350ft/lbs of torque at only 1000 RPM, peak being 425ft/lbs.

That's 82% of it's peak torque at only 1000 RPM's. That's almost unbelievable.

I think the new 3-valve 5.4L's are turning out 80% of their peak at 1000 RPM's now too (heard that on a F150 commercial I think), but with the V10, you have two more cylilnders firing...

Thanks for the feedback. My wonderful wife has given her blessing to me getting the V-10/6spd/4.30', boy this move is really going to cost me. I plan on waiting as long as possible to place an order and still get a 2004 model. My thinking is that any rebates will be maxed out and I like the current model so much that any changes worry me, mainly the loss of the front leaf springs.

BTW- Last Christmas when I ordered my 5.4, several people here tried to steer me towards the V-10. Wish I had taken the advice.
