I had the same problem with my '56 and I tried everything from solvents to detergents even hot water-nothing worked.
I ended up getting another tank.

You might try a radiator shop. I've had a couple of tanks cleaned that way and it didn't cost much. Maybe 20 bucks last time.

I also struggled with a crappy tank for awhile and finally gave up. Found a good used one in a 56 F-600 dump truck at a wrecking yard for $80.

I have cleaned out old gas varnish by using MEK and sloshing the tank around. It's bad stuff but it worked.

Took mine to a radiator shop where they boiled it out and put a sealer in it...It was cheaper than buying a new tank.

I also took mine to a radiator shop. They boiled it out and sealed it. Cost me about $100. I cleaned it out myself a few years ago, but condensation took over, and the tank started to rust and flake off. Since the sealing, I haven't had any problems with dirt or crap in my filter!! Well worth it!

fordfaggiole,
If you are set on doing it yourself, I used lacquer thinner and a handfull of screws to do an ATVtank that had that sticky crud in it. I put about a half a quart in the tank with the screws and shook it until I thought my arms would fall off. I drained it and repeated the process with metal etch in place of lacquer thinner. Flushed it with water several times and then I used some left over gas tank sealer. The radiator shop sounds like a good choice too.
Good Luck,

While you're at it, don't forget to clean out or replace the gas line, too...

Just an after thought, in earlier posts, from 2003, other home fixers reported using a length of heavy chain in the tank to break the muck up. Good luck, John
