Unhappy 93 Side Sliding Door Latch

The latch for the side sliding door is stuck and won't open. Any ideas on what to do? Not sure if it's the lock or what. I'd like to just it !! Thanks for any help.

This has come up here before, and I don't remember what the final solution was. You can do a search on this forum for "door latch" or something similar and you should find the articles.

good luck

You should be able to remove the panel and actuate the latch manually just to get the door open. Look at the thing and see what is detached, not moving, broken or bad. Could be the rods, handle, or the latch.

Well, I got here too late. I had this happen two years ago. My solution was to bang the door with my fist near the latch. I first thought the problem was that the handle was not activating the latch.

By banging the door with my fist I was able to send enough vibration through the door to get the teeth to unhook.

$3 later at the junkyard and I was back in business.

Thanks for all the help. My husband finally got it open after cutting the sheet metal and after a few choice words found the rod had bent. Replaced it and all is well now thank goodness.

Hope yall had a Happy New Year!!

Thats what I had to do to mine, I just cut a hole there large enough to put my hand inside so that I could get it released.
Once you put the door panel back on you never know that its there.

John,

Where do you cut the hole?
How big?
With what?

I've got all the interior panels off and have flooded the latch with lube through the back access slot. I can see that actuator rod flexing toward the outside of the door when I push it, but still haven't gotten the door to open.

cutting hole in side door

I actually cut the hole by drilling a series of holes in a circle and then cut them with some side cutters. The hole I cut it about the middle of the door, where I figured the path of the rod was. Once you get done, bend the edges over so that when you put the trim panel back on it will not stick out.
When you get your hand in there just start working the latch and rod untill it releases, and it will. You just don't have enough room to work the latch with the hole that is already there towards the front of the door.
BUT before you get started cutting, see if you can get someone to help you have them push in on the door back in the back where the latch is (from the outside) while you try to work the door latch, sometimes this will allow it to release.

I drilled a 1/4" hole near the latch and used a steel rod to bear against the rod on the latch to get mine open. It seems this is a more common problem then I thought. I think the main problem is that the kids tried to yank on the handle all too often before I had a chance to unlock. Now, everytime I stop the car, I tell the kids to wait until I click the "unlock" button.

I have to admit that sounds like a better way to do it. I wish I had thought of that!
