I'd love to retire from the warehouse I work at in about 25 years, but the way the current crop of management is running it, I am highly doubtful that will happen.
I never plan to retire from the farm, but the banks and the government might have other plans for me there.
I am a senior Cad draftsman for a concrete company. (I'm only 19). I am going to school part-time to at least earn my associates degree in Civil Engineering. Then I will take over as project manager. Basically I will handle sales, the drafting "department" (all two-threee drafters), engineering, scheduling, trucking, etc.
I took Drafting class in highschool. Got this job as a drafter and was offered a college education and my bosses job when he retired. Totally unexpected. I love my job, and I want to stay here until I retire.
I'm pretty lucky- this is the best job I've ever had, money's good, and my boss is the best. No job is PERFECT, but this one comes damn close. I see no reason to leave.
...Non Destructive Testing Technician level 2 ie X-ray, magnaflux, dye penetrant, leak test, hydro test and N-ray....with a defense sub contractor...can be boring at times (inspect 5000 .50cal primers) however, Im not out in the weather and I get to see things go BOOM...plus no one here can do our job so they leave our dept alone except when they need us....
I wish Id have found this trade/company 20 years ago....
employee owned, good bennies, almost a family atmosphere ie small enough to know most everyone yet big enough to be able to disappear when ya need to and stable enough that there is a large percentage of lifers been here 35-40 years...
Wow, some of you guys have some pretty cool jobs. I absolutely hate my job. I have a Bachelors degree in Electronics, but jobs here in Jacksonville suck unless you are military. I did have a good job but they closed the shop here. And right now, I can't afford to move anywhere else. So I am stuck at Walmart and I hate it. I can't wait til I can get away from that place. I hate customer service jobs period. And with the exception of about 9 months on my last job, that is the only type of job, I have ever had.
Anyone in the electronics industry know where I can get a good job with good pay? I have both associate and bachelor degrees from ITT Tech, but I have relatively little experience, and that is what seems to be hurting me.

I like my job and my crew, but I can't see retiring here. Been here 4 1/2 years and I've gone as far as I can go unless someone quits or dies and they need a replacement in a hurry, and even then there are others who could move up before me. No retirement here either, not the best bennies but I need what I've got. Concerned about the way things have been going (downhill) so might not want to put up with the upper management BS too much longer.
There aren't a lot of good jobs available here, I'm fortunate that I'm adaptable and could sling hash if I needed to. But there is some major expansion going on nearby. I am so tempted to get in one of these businesses from the start and make a career out of it, just hate to leave a job I like for a questionable one.
In a nutshell though, I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up...
Twenty three years Army, Air Guard, Army Guard and 16 federal employee and bought my military time for federal retirement, Five years with Gila River Indian Casinos, Senior communications tech (only commo tech). And for some reason the facilities people think the automatic gates are my responsibility. I work alone for the most part, I have a TV, internet and several computers in my office and they just gave me another raise. But just today they asked me to have a proposal put together by tuesday for upgrading the three casinos to plasma TVs and HDTV. I've been trying to get them interested for two years, now they want the info by tuesday, of course the proposal from two years ago is useless now. I should get a real job. Oh yeah and its a combination office and shop but its the biggest office in the building.
