Where do I begin? I was conned into buying the pickup when I was nine, otherwise I might not have done it. Afew years ago I hated it, mainly because I hadent touched it and the project seemed impossible. This summer, 8 years later (yes I'm a youngin-17) decided to pull out the six and drop in an 8cyl-351. Boy was that a mistake, I yanked out the six and set in the eight. After much hassle with the mounts (and removing those rivits from the tranny mount with the torch-n-chisel method. Yeah do not even try to get any of those rivits off with anything. I ate up a $400 air chisle in the process)I decided to put the six back in about a week ago. Well the pickup's front end is in pieces and bolts are missing. You know how that goes. Anyway it has been one big headache so far but I think it will be worth it.(I hope anyway)
Yes, when you update to newer engines, etc.., be prepared for unforseen problems. it's part of the game. I myself prefer leaving them as they came from the factory, but there's others who want more. To each his own. The number one word is "Patience". It doesn't happen over night! Form a game plan as to what you want to do and do it one step at a time. You will make mistakes, everyone does. learn from them and go on. Take pics of before and after on what you do. It will help in re-assembly and give you a sense of pride and accomplishment. Don't worry about your age, I started in high school (16) on my first project, a 65 Mustang. Go for it and have fun!!
Thank you Barry for your re-assurance. I do believe that this project will take alot of time and effort. I should have thought it through before I went with the swap. But hey things happen dont they. So how was the Mustang? And what are you building now?
I too am 17 and am just starting my 55 f-100 project and its a bit overwelming but in the end I know it will be worth it. Instead of using a air chisle for the rivets next time you might want to just grind the head off the rivet off. Any way good luck with your truck!
I found the best way to remove the rivets when I removed my crossmember was with a 5 lb sledge hammer and a hand chisel. Most of the rivets are not accessable with a grinder anyway.
My first Mustang was a 64-1/2 convertible. Wish I had it now! I went thru 6 mustangs before they got to rich for my blood. I'm now doing a 50 Ford F-1 pickup, all stock. This one will take the longest of anything I've owned. I've owned it about 15 years and at the rate I'm going, it will be another 15 years!!
