Positive Ground Wiring??

Hello to all!! I'm not new to this forum but this is my first time asking for help. I've been learning a lot from you guys and I'm pretty sure someone can help with my question. Got a hold of a 1949 F1 pickup in real good shape. Flathead, my first. How can I tell if this was a positive ground vehicle at one time. There wasn't a battery in it, there's a solenoid on the firewall but no cables attached. Friend of mine told me to be careful and not put just any battery in it (for instance a 12 volt batt.) and to be careful how I connect the cables. So how do I begin?? Thanks in advance fellas.

An easy way to tell if it's 6V or 12V is to pull out a headlamp bulb or any other bulb and look for the number. A decent auto parts store can tell you what the voltage is by the number. As far as the polarity, Put the battery in , use the positive as the ground and see which way the ammeter reads, + or -. You may have to polarize the regulator if it's been sitting for some time. Just verify the voltage before you put a battery in.
