Quickie

My last thread was quite long...and not a person posted on it - so I'll make a shorter one. I was afraid I would scare everybody off from it.

What all manual transmissions were offered in these trucks? I've seen a 4-speed and a 5-speed were put in, and from what I gathered the 4-speed was the B-W that was "bulletproof" and the 5-speed was the...M5OD from Mazda, and have heard many call it a weak link. What is weak about it...or what is its deal. Were those the only transmissions?

Also, what is a good websie to go to that has a lot of information in a well laid-out form, or that sells alot of parts for these trucks - specifically the 4.9L equipped ones.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Also...were there any common problems with these?

Several actually -

M5OD 5 Speed - Put in the 88 to present light duty trucks (Ranger & F150), light duty transmission, it'll do the job but it has it's quirks.

ZF 5 speed - Great transmission, I am hoping to do a swap with it when my M5OD dies. They put it in the F-250s and 350s, and in 88, they put it in the F150s.

Borg Warner T-18 4 speed - "Bulletproof" describes it very well, had a granny low gear which is great for towing. I wish I had one in my truck.

They also put in the TOD 4 speed and one other that I cannot think of right now.

So they decided to put a "light duty" tranmission behind a torque beast? Mine that I'm getting is an 88 I believe so I'll have to wait and see. Is the only way to tell the difference getting under the truck and looking?

I have a 1994 F-150 4.9 5 speed, I pull a 18 ft flat bed with a 4500 ld antique tractor on it. The truck only has 67000 miles on it.I've never had a problem with the trans or clutch.
I pull a 25 ft travel trailer weighing 5001 loaded, again never a problem. I don't beat my truck, you just have to remember theres a six under the hood.

Yeah, just look at the Trans code on the driver's side door jam sticker.

A six that makes 200 lbs. of torque just above idle

I have the 4 speed in my Ford with the 4.9 straight.
Bulletproof would be an understatement after my experence with it.
This truck is my first and first time driving a stick!
When we got it the throw out bearing and another bearing(can't think of the name of it) they were going out.. and the clutch was bad anyway.
But after that swap it is great. I dont need the granny gear, because I am not pulling anything of great weight but I do run the highway very often... so around 65 mph the engine is just screaming way to much for my comfort. I would really love to find a good stong 5 speed for it.
Anyone else done this swap?
