I have a set of C4AE heads and a set of C8AE,, both in good shape . Is there a reason to use one set over the other? Both have hardened seats. would one set flow better ? or give more torque ? The valves and chambers look the same as far as size. thanks , Bob
Stock C4 heads will flow more than the C8's but will drop your compression by a half a point or so. The C8's will have more bottom end torque though. Merry Christmas!
Bob, they're both good. It depends alot on what are you going to be doing. I'll presume you mean C4AE-G and C8AE-H heads. Popular wisdom seems currently to be that the C4s are better if you are consistantly over 400 horsepower. The C8s have smaller chambers, as Barry mentioned. And if you are going to do normal truck stuff like pull trailers and haul firewood, the C8s are probably going to be the way to go. What intake do you have ? That might make the choice for you. If you are building a drag racer, run the C4s. Don't worry that you are hurting performance by choosing the C8s, they are fine. Can you tell us some more ? DF
many thanks for the replys. they are going in a old tow truck that i use to help friends and myself with once in a while , probably wont see over 2500 rpms ,bob
I still don't get why some think that the C4AE-G's have "bigger ports" than the C8AE-H's. I've compared both, and while the C8's look to be smaller, they actually are slightly bigger than the C4's. This is because the bottom 1/4 inch of the C4 is "wasted space". The port floor jumps up abruptly just inside the opening. The C8 port is wider than the C4 and the port floor is raised ( it's modeled after the Medim riser 427 port) which improves the flow and gives the intake charge a straighter shot into the valve pocket. But I'm with dinosaurfan in saying that the choice between the two should also be based on the ports on the intake you want to use. You wouldn't want to use the older C4 port intakes with a C8AE-H or D2TE head. But the opposite would be ok, using a C8 or D2 port intake with C4 style ports
Originally posted by BB I hear ya on that but check out the flow numbers on the two heads, it was posted a few months ago.
The results you posted are interesting but the outcome would also depend on who did what head. As you posted, the D2TE heads with bigger valves, but not the 2.19/1.73 combo , these would be impossible to fit in the available space between the valve guides, but rather it was more likley the 2.09/1.66 CJ-LR combo, out flowed the CJ- C4AE-G's . And fell just shy of the MR, and edelcrock heads. Now those C4AE-G's don't look as promising, do they?
It would appear that they did fit the 2.19's and 1.73's together, then again I can't recall if I've ever measured the distance between the valves on the std heads to see if they wouldn't fit. I just assumed that since Ford revised the heads in the H/R, M/R and T/P heads to accomodate bigger valves, that these bigger ones wouldn't fit the std heads. The one drawback to fitting these bigger valves to the std heads though, is the inevitable cracks that will develop between the bowls. Even with CJ sized valves this is sometimes a problem. I 've also heard that it was a problem in the T/P heads too.
