I bought the truck for 900 & a tree removal the reason it sat for so long is that it was his sons truck and he had died but the father didnt want to get rid of it so he but it on jack stands and let it sit in the car port.
After butting a battery in it, it fired right up. It was leaking from the bottom gasket of the carb so I replaced it. I stated that the interior was trashed but its compleatly dry rotted you can push right through it with no presure. I changed the plugs, belts, breaks & cilinders and the differental fluid and had to install a new radio. I drove up to the poconos and back 250 miles with no problems but found out that when the gas gauge reads 1/4 of a tank that it is empty. Im not sure what causes that. Any suggestions on what else I should do? I will attach a pic when they get back from the lab
Bearings corrode because of dissimilar metal, read crank etc bearings need replacement. Ground movement, wind and vibrations have caused fretting corrosion in all of the ball and roller bearings in the entire truck which means all of the wheel bearings, diff bearings, tranny bearings, U-joints etc need to be replaced. Tranny and lifters etc are all gummed up, seals are rotten. Sitting is BAD!!!
well defantly a project, but a good buy anyway. If you decide you don't need it let me know. I'd like to convert my 79 2WD overto 4WD. Up here 2WD just don't cut it. UncleJesse
At $900 for a body with no rust, a 78 4WD frame, transfer case, front diff, matching rear diff. It's a good deal. I'd be inclined (but mind you I'm nuts) to do a super major tune and refit on it before I used it a lot. All oils, filters, (including tranny oil and filter/screen kit), diff oil change, lube the U-joints and replace the ones that are toast. Brake lines and fuel lines will go south very soon so a re&re is advised. Once I got the majority of that stuff done I'd start to breath a bit easier (especially cause I had a new fuel pump under the seat).
Good deal on the truck. Glad that it's got a new owner and will be treated right. When you get it up and doing well, might be an idea to stop by the former owner and let him see what you've done to "his son's" truck. Might just put a sparkle in his eye.
