distributor replacement help

I plan on get rid of my old dizzy for a new reman. I was wondering what is all invovled. I guess once the plate is off the dizzy should pull right up and the new one install with the rotor pointing at #1 on the cap. Any help is much appreciated.

That's about right, in theory. I mangled the case of mine when I was disassembling my engine, it was pretty well stuck and there's not a nice, easy way to pry on those sucikers. But then again, I was going to get a new one anyhow, like you. For te sake of saying it, as I have overlooked it before, set #1 to TDC before you take out your dizzy, then you don't have to try so hard to find it when you're installing the new one.

One thing to keep in mind... When you pull up on the old dizz, the rotor will turn due to the gear on the bottom/cam. This will cause your rotor to no longer point to the #1, but be a tad off the mark. Keep in mind when replacing the new dizz, you need to go in a tad off correct to compensate for the gear turn. What I have done in the past is mark reference poins on the motor, ie. the dizz to the manifold and the rotor to a point on the manifold/engine as well. The when you drop in the old/new dizz, you have a few points of light to get you back where you belong.

Also, be listening for a "clunk" when you pull the old distributor; that will be the sound of your oil pump shaft dropping into the pan. Sometimes the keeper clip isn't reinstalled leaving the shaft free to come up with the distributor, only to fall out halfway up.

The "clunk" sounds like the beginning of some fun!

in the old days , when a oil pump shaft fell down into the pan , the quickest fix was to go to the parts store buy a new one and install it wjth out worrying about the old one . something i saw done was to get a round magnet and put it on the bottom of the pan to keep the old shaft from bouncing arround , guess im telling my age, i like 'fun' as much as anyone , but if i can avoid some of the 'not so fun fun' , i like that to, good luck, bob

There have been guys on here talk about finding several shafts when they removed their oil pan. It just makes me too nervous. I wouldn't think twice about pulling the motor. I don't have to worry about it becasue I have the ARP shaft and it won't come out unless you loosen the oil pump.
