Well, let's see.... Here in southern Idaho, we live in something called a DESERT. The fine for throwing garbage, paper or burning material out of a car in this state is $500. It should be double that. Every year, there is a range or forest fire started from a cigarette. One burned 235,000 acres. Cost several million to extinguish. Not to mention the particulates put into the air from the smoke, the consequential erosion in ensuing years. 11 years later, and I rode my dirt bike through the area this year, the damage is still evident. I'm not a tree hugger or against smoking, but people who throw them out of the window lit should be publicly flogged.

It's amazing to me to watch how sloppy some people are. People just dump Mcdonalds bags wherever and they are the same as the cig ashtray dumpers.

That said- I will let go of a butt out the window if it's not fire season.

I've done research in my own yard- the single butt does seem to degrade within a few months.

Helps to keep my car smelling fresher so I can get the higher resale value you know.

I do not think anything should be thrown out the window of a car or dumped on the ground. And I infuriates me when I see someone do it whether it is a cigarette butt or a sandwich wrapper. If you are concerned about keeping your car smelling fresher for better resale value then don't smoke in it!

And people should not throw anything out side whether it will degrade on not. Our environment is getting destroyed fast enough with out spreading trash all over. Save it for a trash can where at least it will be confined to one area called a land fill!

What's really fun is to set at a stop light and if the wind is just the right direction you can blow your smoke right into someone elses car through their open window.

Then flick buggars on them.

I've been guilty of tossing a cigarette out the window, and I've always flicked the ashes off that way, but I never have emptied the ashtray out on the ground.

Of course, since the ashtrays in my trucks are full of everything but cigarette butts, that's not too tough to do.

I generally flick off the ashes out the window, the butts usually go out teh window too...unless it's a high fire time. Here in the Phoenix area most landscaping is rock and sand, not much to burn. My ashtrays, when they do get ashes in them, are emptied out in a proper place, like a garbage can or dumpster, never on the ground, that's just stupid to do that.

My post to a litter thread in October.

..."As far as cig butts are concerned, when I smoke and if there is no place to dispose of the butt I field strip it and put it in my pocket until I can throw it away properly. Throwing butts out can cause fires and the ones that don't can cause other problems out here they do not break down very quick. A buddy of mine and I were fishing on the North Platte in Casper, WY we decided to gut a trout that we had caught to see what they were feeding on, this particular trout had 10 butts in its gut, apparantly they do not biodegrade fast enough, this had this trout so pluged up that it was sure to die soon. Yeah some smokers will leave their butts anywhere, but not me or any of my friends that smoke. The point is that this kind of behavior reflects on all people involved in the activity. When nonsmokers have to deal with butts laying around or in the gut of a fish they just caught they will generally cuss all smokers."

smokers amaze me
they have been rude to non smokers for decades, then when Laws are passed mandating that they act with common courtesy, they freak out.
someone complained about a fine for tossing a cigarette out their window.you talk like that is your god given right, even though many forrest fires start this way.Firefighters even die in fires sometimes, so you should be responsable for manslaughter in some cases.
Smokers have been notoriously rude in restaraunts, but are surprised when smoking in restaraunts is banned.
not that all smokers are white trash, but almost all white trash are smokers, Hmmmm...
smoke if you want to, just don't blow it at me.

actualy, when I was a kid, I remember my dad teaching me that real men don't smoke filters

of course, when I was 12 I got the "smoking talk".
dad came home from work, sat down at the table, and lit up a Pall Mall. he took a couple drags, paused, and said"I ever catch you smoking..."took another drag, "I'll break both your arms", exhales in my face, "that'll help you kick the habit."

never liked the taste anyway

I do smoke in my vehicles but I am not a heavy smoker and I always open the window. You would not know that is was smoked in. However heavy smokers that do not open a window leave a smell that even I find disguisting. And yes, some smokers are slobs, but not all. I don't smoke in the house or in any confined area with nonsmokers.
Also I do occasionally throw out an apple core or bannana peel. They are biodegradable and give the ants and birds something to eat.

Whoever said butts are biodegradeable is full of s***. Fiberglass (that is in most filters) isn't biodegradeable. If it was septic tanks and boats wouldnt be made of it. If anyone throws a butt out in front of me they're getting passed and given a real swift break check. All i ask is that you be responsible. You wouldnt like people thrwoing S*** in your yard would you? NO! so dont throw it out!!!

I am also a smoker
Never have I emptied my ashtray in the street, I dont even throw my butts in the street. I usually put them right back in the pack if there is no trash can handy...
I try to be considerate around non smokers, I hate smoking in public anymore just because you are looked at like a leper
Always considerate of my surroundings!!!! Human or otherwise

It's not fiberglass (spun glass) but rather a plastic like polyester that are little threads and are all parallel.

When the paper comes off- the threads can seperate like dandelion seeds into the air.

Oh that makes it better. Now we can all inhale little plastic "Dandelion Seeds". That makes me understand completely. Yeah everyone now that its not fiberglass, Go ahead throw everything you want out the window. Why stop at Butts lets trow washers and driers. Who even needs waste disposal anyways? Lets just throw all our trash out the window.
