That's a crazy question that I have come across with from people who have road in my truck from time to time. I too also was one who pulled on it thinking that there was some type of crazy compartment or ashtray behind it. Yes it is a lame hook. Anything that I have hooked on it never stayed on it for any length of time. Normally it fell off.
My 03' F-650 has no hook but has a nice size ashtray right where the hook would be. One the size of most trucks from the 80's - 90's. There is no double cup holder in it like the F-250's but that's a different story. Just makes you wonder. For those who need a decent ashtray, they could probably replace there "hook" with good size one. Jake.
And I thought that was a dumb question when I asked it a while ago. I did discover that there is an ash tray there on the '99's. So I guess it is just simply a "hook".....for whatever. I have to admit I read my manual from cover to cover to try and figure t out.....but was tooo ashamed to ask my salesman! So I just decided it was a "HOOK" and just left it at that. When somebody asks me what it is I just say it's a hook stupid! What did you think it was.......no really what do you think it is????? Tell me!!!!!! because I don't have a clue. And everybody just agrees it is just a hook.
I thought that was where you were suppose to hang the pink panties ....

This is my first response to a thread, so please bear with me. I removed the "trash bag holder" plate and replaced it with a piece of laun plywood that was sanded smooth and painted. I makes a great place to mount any accessory switches instead of cutting your dash. I have installed three rocker type swithes for various accessory lights on my SD and mounted beside each switch is a different color LED to identify each switch.
