Hello All, i have a 1997 F150. When i get on the gas and the trans drops to the lower gear for more RPM's, the problem is when it kicks back into the high gear, the trans kind of vibrates and then kicks in. Some times it vibrates and sometimes it doesnt.
Please help
thanks

P.S. and if you dont understand please let me know.
How long has it been since the fluid was changed? These tranny's are prone to this if the fluid isn't changed about every 30,000 miles or so, as recommended in the owners manual.
It shounds like torque converter chatter to me.

I purchased a 98 F150 4.6L new and it has done pretty much the same thing very 30,000 miles or so. A fluid and filter change clears it up. I've heard this is a common problem but regular maintence will keep it from happening. Be careful when removing the filter the rubber O-Ring on the neck will stay up in the transmission and the new filter will not stay in place until it's removed. Carefully pop it out with a small blade screwdriver, but don't scratch the housing in the process.
My question of the day is - Why don't they put a drain port in the transmission pan?
50th ann here's a little tip for you. Instead of using a screwdriver to pop out the o-ring try using the round (ratchet) end of a 3/8" drive extension. It works really well and wont scratch the bore.
Having the tranmission flushed is a good way to do it but then so is dropping the pan and draining it that way. There is also a plug on the torque convertor so you can drain that too. Both ways will do the same job but if you pull the pan you can replace the filter too. Quite often when shops flush the trans they dont touch the filter.
Adding a drain plug is a good idea. I think that B&M and maybe Transgo make plugs for them. I'm sure others do too.
