I just bought a 77 ford pickup. It has a 351w engine in it. The engine appears to be original and it has heads with no smog on them. The heads are going to need work soon and what I want to know is should I rebuild those heads or get another pair to rebuild. I dont want a new set of 1k heads. Number 1 im not spending a grand on heads. I know that in the late 70s engine hp went down do to heads having emmisions and more restrictive chambers and small valves in the heads. What other heads have large valves and flow real well? I've heard gt 40 heads work good and can be found on the cobras and 97 and up explorer and mountainiers. Im just looking for opinions here on cylinder heads. Like i said im not buying 1k priced heads. Yea there great, but not worth it to me. I just want to know what the best flowing STOCK clyinder heads would be for this 351w. Thanks.
The Gt-40's are supposed to be pretty good as far as stock heads go. I'm running 69 heads but I'm also running a 69 block. I've heard the 69 heads flow better than the Gt-40's but don't have as good of a combustion chamber. They do have bigger valves.
One thing that catches my attention is the fact that you have a 77 model truck and say you have the 351W. Now don't take this as a fact because I'm no expert but I don't think they put a 351W in the 77 trucks. They had 6's, 302, 351M's and fe's such as 360's and 390's. I may well be wrong though but someone will correct me if I am. I'm betting if it's original that you have a 351M in there

i've had real good luck with 69 heads (casting #dooe) on a 73 block. put a 3 angle valve job, hardend valve seats, slightly bigger than stock cam, and eb alum intake, 650 carb. power to spare.
Are you positive it's not a 351M? I'm pretty sure that the 351M should have been the stock engine on a '77, but can't comment on whether or not the 351W was actually offered in this year. If it's a 351M, then you don't have a lot of head choices.
I bought the truck yesterday but I wont be picking it up for a few days, when I get it here I'll have another look at the engine. Going to take a while to get it home though its an hour and a half away in Alabama. And yes, if you want old ford trucks, You go to Alabama to get them.
