I have a 79 Ford F100 302 2WD that was donated to me 3 years ago.
The harmonic balancer breaks every year. I've had to replace it 3 times in 3 years - about 11 or 12 months apart.
What could be causing the strain on the harmonic balancer that it keeps going out? Is there a diagnostic test that I can use to eliminate some of the possibities?
I don't know alot about the 302's. Some engines are balanced internally. I think the small block 400 is internally balanced. You might try to make to a ford dealer and ask one of the mechanics if the engine you have is balance internally as the harmonic balancer is an external balance which might cause a problem????? Wish I knew more to help.
Good Luck, Tim
Could there be fluid(s) leaking onto it and destroying the rubber insert? What was the rubber like out of the old ones? Maybe you were buying chinese counterfeit parts?
Hello. I have a 79 F100/302 that did the same thing. The balancer broke in three pieces at the hub where it slides on the crank. I was missing a large washer that holds the balancer to the crank. I bought a new balancer/bolt/washer from Ford, used loctite on the bolt and snugged it down with an impact, and It's been fine ever since. (that was three years ago) If the belts are too tight, that might put a strain on the balancer hub as well.
