I currently have a C6 in a 86 F150. I am doing some upgrading to the truck for towing. I would like to replace the current 2.47 rear axle ratio with 4.10's. My question is, how is the AOD transmissions for towing? I love the C6 but would like an overdrive gear. Would the gas mileage be terrible with 4.10's and the C6? I currently get around 12-14 empty. Ithink the current ratio is just too high even with no load.
I've been studing this issue for some time now as I have a CC Dually 85 410 rear and a 460/c6. Gas mileage can be figured in feet. Tail shaft Gear Vendors are great in quality and expence. AOD with change over cost is great also. AOD with new input shaft is trustworthy and gives the greatest overdrive %. Brownie aux. transmission is a good alternative if you can find one. All in all change over cost equals truck value many times in the older vehicles.
Not too sure about aod dependability behind a 351 and towing a load. There are a lot of people who like them, and even more who hate them. It all depends on who builds it and how you use it.
You could get a C-6 behind a 302. If you go with the AOD get a B & M or TCI and it should be dependable towing. Also a 351 C-6 and 3.73 is a good combination.

i tow with a 93 E-150 5.0 AOD with 3.55 gears... I rebuilt the tranny at 80,000. Since i have no clue on tranny's i just thought might be useful to ya.
I think AOD's are very good transmissions if they are kept in adjustment. I bet over 90% of the time one fails is because the TV cable wasnt adjusted properly or lack of maintence.
There is no computer with an AOD. I have 110k on mine and it works perfect. I use ATF+3 for Chrysler vehicles because the friction modifiers are better. I agree that they are a good trans I should have put one in my Ranger when I put the 302 in it.

i am planning on towing a 1968 mustang coupe on a full trailer (U-Hual) with my truck over about 1,500 miles i have the AOD i replaced the engine about 2 years ago with a crate 302 and now has 35,000 miles on it, the AOD tranny has probally 100,000 plus on it as does the transfer case i had both difs rebuilt at the same time the engine went it i dont know my gear ratios. im planning on adding a medium duty tranny cooler. this is my first time to tow with this truck and probally my last. any advise? ive towed a 35 foot camping trailer with a 1971 Chevy C-10, 250 I6 Munsie 4-SP manual i dont miss the I6 but id kill to have that tranny again no time for a swap out nor do i have the $$$$ for it

Thanks in advance.
the AOD is fords best OD tranny ever and a fav of racers. however, dont even dream of towing in overdrive, you will rip the splines out of the converter for the direct input shaft.
I put 220K on mine towing heavy things before I lost a spring and roller clutch - so with my miles I did a full rebuild. the key for an AOD is frequent oil changes and a very large cooler.
if you have a few extra $$ laying around, there is a new gearset for 1-2 that adds about 15% ratio internally, there is a much larger band, and kevalr clutches available.
