Just had to take my 97 psd through an emission test.
With a gas car or truck they just plug in the computer and it "reads" your emissions.
With the deisel they do what they call a "snap" test where you runs through about 6 tests of flooring the pedal until the governer kicks in.
Does anyone know exactly what this "snap" test is and does?
No, but flooring to redline is not good. I have had to do emissions as well, going from Idle, 800rpm to 2000rpm is more than enough for the test, if they tell you to floor it, go somewhere else to have it tested.
yea, i agree with cangim, that sounds like a load of fresh, wet manure. Especially with no load on the engine.
Where are you that you have to take a diesel through emissions?
I live just outside of the DC area and trucks over 10000# and diesels dont have to go through emissions.
Hey 89f250, I dont know where your from but in AZ all you have to do is a rolling test up to about 45-50mph or so and a idle test. I geussing that it is like that almost anywere else.If they told me to floor it and hold it, I tell them to stick it up there A@#.

How did you get away without the stupid "snap" test? I refused and left, called Phoenix and was told I wouldn't get a tag. They said Ford OKed the test. I went through again.but only ran it to 2900 slowly. for the six times.
Jerrybo66,
I dont know if your being a smart A@# or talking down to me like i dont know what I'm talking about but thats how the test here in Tucson. For deisels you do a rolling test to about 45-50mph,then you do a idle test and thats it.They do the same test for all vehicles(except bikes) with deisels alittle more speed.I dont know what tests ya'll do where you are in AZ or anywhere else but thats how they do it here.I would like to know more info on the test you do cause its not like what i've been doing.
Jozey.
Chill out.. I will never flame a poster in this forum . It's too great a forum for that kind of replies.. I was wondering how you could get a half way sensible emmission check when the idiots in Mesa try to blow up our trucks..Anyone that lives in Az. knows that the emmission project is a money making farce but why is it administered differantly in different locations..
I just flunked my gasser today.. I had a bad gas cap..I will have that warm fuzzy feeling that I will be saving many innocent women and children's lives by replacing the cap that has a 3/16 hole in it that isn't functioning propertly...Damn, I wish I had a white horse...
Jerrybo66,
I feel bad for that post. I just jumped the gun and didnt read it good enough and again I'm sorry.Emissions are retarded anyway, they can flunk you but the car in front of you smokes like a bitch and it passes.Just doesnt make sence.Hope there is no hard feeling about my responce.Have a merry X-Mas and a save new year.
I'm jealous that you're there and I'm here.... Anyways, I moved away from Tucson about 2 1/2 years ago and said good riddens to the whole emission farce. Back then, my diesel was exempt though they charged me a fee towards emissions to renew my tags anyways..... I guess that was just to reinforce that that program is just a money generator! When did they start emission testing diesels??
Here in Washington, diesels are subject to the same "snap" test. After revving the engine moderately a few times, you're instructed to rev it quickly to 3000 rpm, and then let it idle back down. You do this three times. What they're measuring is the opacity of the exhaust, and the limit is 40%. When my truck was tested last year, I measured 1%. You don't get the option of taking it somewhere else for testing, unless you mean another state, since it's the state that conducts the test. No test, no tags.
AZ is definantly trying to milk as much $ out of us as possible. About 4 years ago I was totally stunned when a whole group of cars was pulled over for random emissions testing. I didn't think it could be legal. I got into a serious argument with the emission testers and the cops. I'm military stationed in Tucson, I live here but I'm not a resident, my vehicle was registered in FL. They don't seem to like that. They wanted me to switch residency, drivers license, auto registration, and auto insurance to AZ. No way am I going to change over to thier sky high rates.
I haven't seen the random emission vehicle since that week , I guess somebody filed a law suit and scared them. Tucson sure comes up with some borderline ideas on making $. I guess thay have to pay for a lot of stupid public works projects. Here by me in the NE side they just finished painting over stucco that they sculpted over real rock! They even painted it purple! If you're ever in Tucson check out the scenery on Sunrise drv between Swan rd and Sabino Canyon drv. I've never seen such a waste of tax payers money.
Jlower,
I also live in Tucson and I totaly agree with you on wasting tax payers money for stupid SH@#.They need to start wporking on the things that need to be improved. There is just to much construction goin on here and nothing getting done.Just more traffic jams. The emission thing is just something else to waste money on.Leave the deisels alone and worry about the cars and trucks that blow out white and blue smoke that hardly run and fail them in emissions.
