I went with the Sony digital 8 because I wanted the backwards compatibility that it offers plus I wanted the digital capability for new stuff so I could eventually put all my stuff on the computer or on DVDs. I have a mess of Hi8 tapes that I wouldn't be able to play without some sort Hi8 camera (haven't seen a Hi8 VCR), so the digital 8 was an easy choice for me. However, I did have a problem with the Sony. The motor that drives the tape on the first one I bought made so much noise that it was recorded by the camera. I returned that one and got another. The motor was not exactly quiet, but it couldn't be heard on the recording. My 12 year old Sharp was really quiet in comparison. So much for progress.
