What year range F100 box are you suppose to use? I called Wild Horses and they could only tell me "mid 70s". I called my local parts store and they said the part # changes from 1975 to 1976. Any one know for shure? Any one done this conversion and like it?
No--The steering box on a 4X4 is mounted on the front outside of the frame and steers back THE 2 wheel drive is mounted on the back of the suspension and steers forward.
i converted a early bronco 1966 to power steering years ago. there was a artical in offroad on 4/4 mag, using a thunderbird p/s box. it wasn't that dificalt to install. it used i think 2 of the bolt holes already in the frame, and you had to fab a bracket and weld on the box for the third bolt. you used pump and brackets on engine from any 289/302. this poor old bronco has seen a tough life. we started out trail riding, and things only went radical from there. over the years the frame was cut and 18" was welded into it. the bronco body was removed and a 1964 rancharo body installed. the 289 was replaced and a 351 c installed. was used for sand drags and up hill racing. the power steering still working. i built a 9" diff for the front so i could change gears easily. spool front, and rear. 20" super scupes rear and12.50 pattrac up front. we didn't make a lot of chevy boys happy with this old ford. o for the good old days!!!
70-79 F100, 150 and 250 2wd boxes will work. I know that 67 had a unique box, but I'm not sure when they changed. AFAIK, there is no difference between 75-76. What they may have been looking at was 4wd applications. 75 used the ram assist power steering with a manual box and in 76, they went to the integral box.
You can use a 100, 150 4wd box, but some minor reworking will need to be done. It is actually a better setup than the 2wd box as it is about the same height as a Bronco ps box.
The TBird, Lincoln conversion is lesser known, but a pretty good swap because of the short sector shaft. It mounts very similar to These boxes are getting harder to come by though.
I have done a couple of these conversions. IMO and experience, I wouldn't recommend it. The extremely long sector shaft changes the draglink angle and steering geometry. No matter what you do to compensate for it, it will always have bump steer and poor handling. And the increased height of the box puts a lot of stress on the frame from increased leverage.
