So while I am waiting for my Factory Shop manual on CD-rom. Can anyone help me with a leakage problem on my power steering gear unit?
From what I can see there is a shaft that comes right up through the top of the unit from below. Right where that is there is a leak around that cap. I have two questions. One, I am assuming that I can just get a seal kit to fix this? And two, do I need to remove the unit to fix this or can I do this with the unit in the truck?
Do you know if your PS unit is a Bendix or Ford box?
I don't quite understand where the leak is oming from. Is the leak on the top or bottom of the box?
If it is a Ford box, you can get a lower seal kit from Autozone for about 10 or 12 bucks. You can replace the 2 lower seals in a Ford box with it in the truck. You will need a Pitman arm puller.
If it is a Bendix box, get it done professionally!
I cannot speak to the upper side of a Ford box; I do not know if the seals are available, or if upper seal leakage indicates more serious trouble not fixable by replacing a seal or two.
I don't know if it is a Bendix or Ford box. It is leaking out the top of the gear box. You can see it from above, when you look in from opening the hood.
I suppose I am going to just have to roll up my sleeves and get dirty. Thanks for the helpe though! I will let you know what is up when I get it done!
i did find a seal for the top shaft of a steering box i had in my truck, they had them at autozone for like 1 dollar. but upon pulling the box and seeing the job it was to install he new seal, i just went to the salvage yard and yanked another box for 25 bucks and put it in instead, not a hard job about 2 hours from start to finish.
Got my Detroit Iron Orignal Shop manual on CD-rom today!!! Thanks for the input I will dig right into this CD-rom and see if what I am seeing has any connection to the tips you all gave me! Thanks again.
Nope! I can say from looking at your pictures that I do not have a Bendix unit. Mine is much straighter or in-line than yours. I really need to get some pictures posted in my gallery! Thanks gtex!
