Take into consideration that I am from Canada. If something to you is like $99 USD that means it's like 1 Zillion dollars in our good ole Canadian dollar.

My experience with GPS is having used them on motorcycles trips over the last six years. I've just bought my second one a Garmin 176C. It's a good unit but I/m still having trouble focusing on it well. Actually think I'm going to sell it. Every year I go on long distance rides out west and I ride from here in Charlotte and generally average 5 to 10K miles in two to three weeks. Year befor last I made the pilgramage to Alaska up the AK Highway. I will never travel without a GPS, period. But I have to say I still think the first one i used and still have is the handheld Garmin EMap unit. I think it's out of production now but I used it for close to 65K miles on my old 1100R and now for ten K on my new GS. I mount them up on my handlebars where I can see and manipulate them while driving. Just get one! :-)

I have installed a Garmin GPS 128 on to my transmission hub in the cab just below the dashboard (see my gallery) and the patch antenna stuck to the dashboard with double stick foam tape with clear view of the sky......... It certainly is the most acurate speedometer you can find besides the other benefits.

Hands down for the serious traveler. The Delorme mapping programs coupled with the earthmate GPS unit is the best by far.

I Have been using this setup for 5 or 6 years now. I travel professionally every day. this GPS unit setup makes a dummy look smart. coupled with a laptop the view of the screen is far more superior that5 those little handheld of little automobile sets.

The Delorme 2004 street atlas and the earthmate GPS reciever will run you a little over $100.

Thats a far cry from Hundreds or thousands of dollars for the little dinky units that don't do half of what the Delorme products do coupled with a laptop.

I have the Garmin GPS V. I mounted it above the inside rear view mirror. I hard wired it into a constant power source and have a powered antenna on the dash. You can tuck all the wires into the headliner and run them down along the A-piller for a really clean look.

I went a little different route, since I already had a Garmin E-trex GPS I thought getting another one was redundant. I bought the Delorme map program for about $30 bucks then use the computer cord that came with the E-trex so I could use the E-trex as an anntenna. I put the laptop on the seat and plug it into the inverter. It gives full range with two screen options, (night and Day), and it talks to you using the MS voice recognition program. Works like the EarthMate put saves if you own a computer supported hand held GPS unit.

P.S. Other than for work, only use one on rare occasions. Then again, I like having it just in case.

after our home gets re-financed, my wife has given me the OK to get a GPS, FINALLY!
i've only wanted one for years. first and foremost, i am buying mine from costco. they have a liberal return policy. i am torn between the garmin 2610 and the Magellan roadmate. both are over 900 bucks; i only want to have to buy one once. for years, my wife has been saying "some day". the funny thing is, it's going to go in HER van! we do foster care and she is constantly driving these kids around to visits and other appointments. i'm always getting a call at work asking me to get directions for her off the internet. i'm more than likely going with the Magellan for it's 3-D display; i think my wife will benefit from it.

I picked up a Garmin etrax Vista yesterday. Seemed like the best bang for the buck. I had just about sold myself on a Megellan until I found out it was a French company.

Well let me see........
I am by nature an isolationsist.I spent 30 years in the Army and still work for the Army. I just never have cared much for the French govenments support to our endeavors. Thanks for the statue but how about a little help this century! I vote my convictions and pocket book. Garmin makes a good product that I found out is being used by our troops in the current conflict.Garmin probably makes part of their products off shore but at least the headquarters is in Kansas.

i hear 'ya loud and clear. i'm not much into politics; running a foster home with my wife and 7 kids keeps me occupied. but from i do know, you are right. not a whole lot of support from them. i just happen to watch "the patriot" 2 nights ago and i didn't know the french helped us out during the revolutionary war; at least that's what the movie said. (it's been awhie since high school history class). i had a good friend take a trip to france with his mother, sister and neice. he said he would never go back. RUDE people. i'm going to stop here. this is the GPS post. anyway, i may rethink my gps choice.
