Could be a multitude of things, the question is much too general, sorry can't help much without seeing truck in person, but here goes:
Look for vacuum leaks, plug gap closed, wires off, cracked cap, cracked rotor, bare/shorted ignition wires, carb/float level. Backfiring out exhaust can mean too rich a mixture, can also mean it's way out of time, or you can have a burned exhaust valve too...
Try a compression test and leakdown test also. Have someone put the engine on a 'scope and check the ignition if you can't nail it down.
and/or about 25 other things could cause it...
