I was in a hurry last month and went to a local lube shop to have my oil changed, but not my air filter. They must have checked my air filter by removing the lid. They didnt put back on tight. The three fingers on the drivers side werent in place all the way. I have driven for almost 2000 miles until I took a hard look and relized the problem. I have gotten some blowby, fine dust on the inside of the airbox. I dont know what to do now. What are the signs of damage to look for. Can anyone help.
Reach as far into the tubing as possible, and clean anything/everything out that you can reach. Be sure you put things back together so you don't have any future leaks, and make plans to get a better intake system. I recommend a TYMAR for a lot of reasons, but keeping dust from getting into your engine is the one that probably sounds like the best idea to you right now.
As dusty as it gets in Pendleton, it probably hasn't been too bad over the past few months, so you might not have done any damage to the truck.
pull off all the ducting from the box to the turbo and look at the turbo fins. if the fins look sharp and clean, you should be good. and like quadzilla said, get a tymar and know you won't have to deal with this again
If yours is an early 99 like mine that airbox is a piece of crap . My mechanic broke the tabs off and didn't say anything to me . Lucky I checked everything when I got home . Well , when I got back to his shop ( after calming down) and showed him what happened he called Ford and got a replacement ordered . It came in the next day and he had the same flunkie replace the lid , you can probably guess what happened next , the dumb*** snapped off two tabs again . I flipped , the shop owner flipped and that guy was fired ( he had other issues also ) . So ,we called Ford again and the parts guy came up with a good solution . For 125.00 instead of 110.00 bucks you can get the 2000 air box which gets air from the front of the truck instead of the fender and it has the metal locking clamps instead of those plastic pieces of chit . It took about an hour to replace and works fine .
I had the same problem. I pulled the intake hose off and stuck my digital camera down towards the turbo. Took a picture and I got a really good look at the fins. The picture is listed in my gallery. The fin tips are a bit chewed up but I sent he picture to an authorized garrett repair shop and the mechanic said it looks fine. I had Ford test the turbo and it is still in spec. I put the updated airbox on mine as well. The old style is a piece of chit.
I installed the Motorcraft Severe Duty airbox and filter on my 02 PSD to prevent the potential of dusting my engine.
I run a chip and within 2 minutes of driving, the filter restrictiction minder maxed out, and it maxes out continuously. I disconnected the wires to the minder sensor to prevent the idiot light from coming on.
Of course, there are a lot of other aftermarket air intakes out there to consider but this is the only one I've found that will not void the Ford warranty. I still have about 70K to go.
Not too sure about the Severe Duty box and the air flow.
Seems like my PSD is struggling for air.
