According to the tour guides at the collisuem a few weeks ago, the romans never actually fed anyone to the lions. There were four types of games at the colliseum:
1. Gladiator vs Gladiator
2. Gladiators (emphasis plural) vs exotic animals including lions
3. animal vs animal
4. one mock naval battle during which the wooden floor of the collisium was flooded.
no. gladiators were mostly slaves. Though there were some professional gladiators. All the fighters trained at private schools to teach them how to fight. Not every slave was gladiator material. Also, each school or team had it's own tactics, uniforms and weapons. most fights were between teams that consisted of 2 dozen or more fighters at a time.
most people think the people were just fed to the lions. usually the animals were eaten after they were killed.
I always thought it was more like it was in the movie gladiator, where lots of slaves were just fodder for the better gladiators.I wouldn't doubt some of those slaves were christians. I always thought they just let people try to fight the lions, but thats a loosing proposition if you're unarmed, so its basically feeding people to lions.
