I don't know, but the transmission has held back my 10,000 lb trailer quite well down a number of 6 and 8 percent grades.
I can go down the grades with no or only occasional brake application.
When talking to some folks prior to actually towing the trailer around, I had thought I might want to add an exhaust brake, but after pulling the trailer around Southern California mountains and from SoCal to Denver and back, I really don't see the need.
The transmission alone has worked quite well for me.
I’m at 19k plus and what I have found. Starting down a grade I click on Tow/Haul (you might be in it already).
When you reach the desired MPH tap and hold the brake for a few seconds the amazing tranny will do the rest, I have maintained within two MPH of 68 going down a 7%grade.
The motor is great the tranny unbelievable. You just do not use your brakes. Running down the road I never leave it in T/H use to much fuel, want to pull off hit T/H mode and let the thing earn its cost.
The trans. has simular braking fetures, when you apply the brakes for a certian amount of time the trans. goes into braking mode, at witch time it holds gears and down shifts at will, keep in mind that a diesel doesn't have that big of a power band, so it can't do extreem down shifts like a gasser could, the diesel does have very good compresion braking though due to have so much compresion. Just my $0.02
In the tow haul position all shift points are changed. Also, the converter stays locked in od. when you decelerate. At about 52 mph it will downshift to fourth with out unlocking. When you are not in t/h the converter unlocks upon release of fuel feed. In t/h (unlike the allison) the trans computer moniters the brakes and will downshift with brake application. All downshifts seem to be with converter locked until low speed. This engine/transmission makes mountian driving a breeze with 12000 lbs of 5th wheel behind.
