clicking noises from steering

clicking noises from steering
After I completed some engine bay beautification I am experiencing a single click or knock when I turn the steering wheel left or right. This same noise is also noticable when going over a rough surface. Following the engine bay washdown I lubed the chassis and u joints. I seem to think the noise is coming out of the steering gear box or some related linkage. What are your thoughts? Thanks

I am in the process of replacing my steering gearbox because of a noise like this plus it shakes at higher speeds and tends to wander, especially over a washboard road. There is also alot of play in it. But you probably won't notice if it has play in it until you take it off the vehicle. Hope this helps, Chris

Put a jack under the axle and lift the front tires off the ground. Either turn the wheels by hand under the truck, or have someone else turn them for you...see if you can see/hear anything. Check ball joints too.
