Extra SHocks???

I have a 98 Merc Mountaineer AWD. I noticed while looking under the rear axle, onthe right side just front of the right wheel there is a shock absorber. However, there is not one in the same position on the left side. Is this correct? The regular shocks behind the axle are there, but that one extra shock confuses me. It notice also that the truck leans slightly leans to the left. Is all this normal??

Thanks so much for the educated answer. SO what's the purpose for only one shock on the right side?.......
