I have a cracked drivers side exhaust manifold on a 1988 F150 with a 302. Does anyone know if I should change the studs even if they don't break off or can I just use them again.
I think they are bolts, not studs. I would replace them. Summit makes a nice set of shorty headers for the truck that are about the same cost as the manifolds and bolt right up. Includes studs and a gasket.
I just swapped my cracked manifolds for the "cheap" Summit shorty headers on my '92 F-150 Flairside 4x4 5.0. they bolted up to the engine with no problem, but the flanges to the motor pipes were to big and did not seal. My local muffler shop had to modify the pipes at a cost of $100+ tx. Any one else run into this problem.
Thanks to both of you for responding. I already ordered a stock manifold at autozone, but I might try some headers anyway. I will replace the bolts for sure.
I was thinking about getting the Summit headers, or maybe pay $20 more for the flowtech's (it seems summit is using more of the pace setters than the flowtechs now).
I would be interested in knowing more about the problem you ran into. Is that where the headers exited into the Y-pipe the headers were too big?
Also were your headers from summit the grey or black when you got them?
While waiting to replace you could grind the crack out if its accessible and put some JB Weld on it. Worked for a while on mine that cracked on the passengers side.
my manifold was cracked on my passenger side and I put a set of headers on, the only problem I had was the EGR line was stuck and just didn't want to come loose, and then those darn air pump lines wouldn't budge either, but yours may not have those , also ended up breaking off 3 of the 4 flange bolts on back of the manifolds , them things were really stuck, you might want to soak that stuff in penetrating oil before trying to loosen.
To answer mrks questions, the problem with my headers was the fit at Y pipe on both sides. The header flange was to big and the Y pipe would not seal around it. The headers were black and I believe they were manufactured by Pacesetter. Several of the bolts attatching the headers to the head were difficult to access also, but this has been my experience with other installations I have done. Good luck with yours, ff0ty03.
i had the problem with the cracked manifold. i have came to the conclusion of the the brackets to life the engine end up breaking the manifold. i never managed to break the bolts into the headers. the studs broke off at the 1/2 way point but i managed ot get them out. im skepticla about the headers and i need a new oil dipstick( the whole setup). im not goign to get headers because this is my first car. getting th manifold to lien up rgth wa s a pan in the ****. abotu getitng new studs if oyu have liek an ace hardware they have them and so does leader true value. btu only oen of them has the studs and one of them has the actual bolts. if you need to know the specs of the bolts and studs i could tell you what you need.
good luck man
Thanks for the heads up about that stuff. I had heard that summit had switched to using pacesetter headers for the 302. They used to use flowtechs, but they switched. I'll probably get the flowtechs from jegs to avoid a fit problem. I have a newer y pipe, so maybe that will help the fit.

what if you have the stock y pipe setup? Like for me I have true duals running straight off of the double outlet y pipe. Headers aren't going to bolt up to that will they? I will have to get pipe installed so that it will make it fit to my dual exhaust. Plus another thing.... what about the o2 sensor?
I think the shorties should fit as long as the pipe is stock or a stock replacement. My Y-pipe bolts in the exact same place as the stock one, so I think a stock y-pipe would bolt up fine with shorties because the location is the same. The shorties are basically the exact same size as stock manifolds, so anything that can bolt up to the manifolds should bolt up to the shorties.

I've been reading about Dynomax Headers and I have a standard tranny and it says that they won't fit my vehicle, is this true? Heck they are only $119 for a set at summit. Are they garbage headers tho?
I am not sure about the fit. I have had good luck with dynomax stuff. It's a reasonable price and performs well. I have a dynomax muffler, y-pipe, and cat.
I should have specified, but the headers I was talking about were the summit racing (flowtech) smog shorties. Those dynomax headers are long pipes which are much better for torque and hp.
If I didn't have a brand new y-pipe and single exhaust I would get long pipe headers, especially since the 302 is a little bit short on torque. I think dynomax headers are very good if they do fit though. I believe torqueking has a set and he is very knowledgeable in these things. You might want to try looking him up on this board. You will probably need to install a dual exhaust of some sort. I think dynomax has a kit for that too.
matt,
I already have duals! Check my gallery for a bunch of pictures and let me know if headers would work with that setup. O.k? Thanks.
I think it might work but I'm probably wrong, I don't want to spend alot of money here. I have other things to do on the truck as well. Anyways let me know man, thanks.
