Its time for my first oil change (since ive owned it) in my 2000 excursion (v-10). I went in to oriely's and asked what oil was recomended for this engine. They guy checked the computer and said it recomended 5w20 sythetic. I have NEVER used 5w20 in anything I have owned. I do use sythetic however. My excursion has 150,000 miles on it and runs great. I bought the 5w20 because they said that is what it calls for. But now I am having second thoughts. Should this be ok?
It's exactly what you should be using, 5w20 is what is specified by ford for the modular engines. 5w30 is okay as well since that is what ford originally specified, but if you live in a really cold climate then it's safer to stick with the 5w20 due to the smaller tolerances of the modular engines.

Thank you sir! I wouldn't say we live in a real cold climate (however it has been the last few weeks here in Ok).
My '02 Ex with the 6.8L V10 has 5W-20 stamped on the oil fill cap. Does your 2000 have anything stamped on it?
I believe its stamped 5w30. However, the parts store gave the recommendation based off the bulletin saying ford now recommends 5w20. I am sure with the cold weather 5w20 will be fine for now and I can change back to 5w30 at the next oil change
My 01 f250 has 5w20 on the fill cap. I read a post in this forum somewhere about Ford switching the recommended oil from 5w30 to 5w20. My truck has 101,000 miles and I just put in 5w20 synthetic. No leaks, good oil pressure. Can't think of a reason not to use the recommended weight.
