Just bought a used 95' F-350 PSD wih 200K. Droped oil sample and sent to Wear Check for analysis. Came back with abnormal reading in Silicon, Aluminum, and Iron. The first two indicators indicate dirt, the latter wear on metal to metal parts. I don't know how long the oil sampled was in truck. I plan on doing a short drain interval and see if it improved.
Anyone had experiance with "Cleaning up a PSD" with contaminated oil.
Someone has removed part of the stoke air cleaner, this may be part of the problem? Any known issues with the stock air cleaner?
I'd change the oil and run it about 3000 miles, then pull another sample.
The PSD holds around a quart of old oil that won't drain out, so for a fresh start, you'll have to flush the engine by changing the oil and filter twice after a very short interval. Cost wise, I don't think that's justified.
There was a recall on the 95's for the air cleaner box, so if your already missing part of it, you might as well spend the money and get a good aftermarket setup.
You don't want to run the truck with pieces missing from the intake. One of the bad things that can happen to these trucks is ingesting dust into the turbo. Even the lame "stock" intake would be better than anything with pieces missing that could allow unfiltered air from entering the turbo. A TYMAR intake is only slightly more that $100, and would do you a world of good.
As alanscott suggested, I'd run the truck a few thousand miles after an oil change, (and after getting the intake fixed) and send in another sample.
Made my own tymar type system, whole thing cost roughly 40 bucks.
Napa air filter #6637 cost $23.00
4" stainless elbow at local heavy truck shop $15.00
Rubber pipe connector seal with hose clamps, purchased at my local Menards hardware store $2.37
Made a noticable difference in power and I just love the turbo whine. I'm much happier with this system than the stock airbox, I sure there is no dirt getting into the engine.
