I have an 89 Bll that I changed a bad water pump on........now it will only idle at 500 rpm which is not good for these Northern climes..........any suggestions?
Sorry...........I'm only an apprentice backyard mechanic. I don't know what IAC means or where it would be located. Will look into the procedures for pulling the codes............Thx for pointing me in the right direction
I hadn't touched the IAC at all. Pulled the plug on it and the motor stalls. Remember its only idling at 500. Pulled the IAC off to see if something was wrong internally and discovered thers not much to see inside. The rod insiside is not seized, it has approx 1/4 travel...........is there someway of testing this puppy? Having trouble pulling off codes as well, as I am not sure what I'm looking for? Any help would be greatly appreciated? If the IAC is a dud, is it worth it to get one from the wreckers? or ist it better to get a new one?
Heres 2 examples of how simple it can sometimes be to fix a problem by very simply hooking up a code scanner & taking 2 minutes to pull the trouble codes. When my 87, 2.9 was stalling/pinging just above an idle, i hooked up my 35 buck Actron CP-9015 code scanner & within 2 minutes I had pulled trouble code 53 "Throttle position sensor voltage is too high" It took about 2 minutes to replace the sensor & the problem was solved.
When the cruise control quit working I hooked up the scanner & 2 minutes
later I got trouble code 29 "vehicle speed sensor voltage is too low" Replaced the VSS & that problem was solved. Since the scanner is only about 35 bucks at Autozone, your best bet would be to buy one, take a couple minutes to read the manual that comes with it & then take 2 minutes to pull the codes. Post the codes here.
Did you check out the procedure? The connector is attached or hanging to the rear of the power distibution bofuse box under the hood on the passengers side).
I havent done that as yet, as I have to get a code reader. I went to a wrecker and got another IAC and installed it, and low and behold when the truck is first started when cold it starts great and revs up to 1200........for about 5 seconds....then goes down to 500. This leads me to believe one of the other sensors is not working. Am I on the right track?
