confused....

kind of confused here and wondering if someone could help me out. ive got a 2000 f250 with the 5.4, 4.10 gears, and 5 speed. everything ive read says that my gcvwr is 15,000 pounds. i have a 97 f250 hd that is our company truck. it has a 351, 5 speed, and maybe a 4.10 gear, but not sure. it says that its gcvwr is 23,000 pounds. subtract the weight of the truck and im only supposed to tow 9,000 with mine but i can tow 19,000 with the company truck. anyone got a good reason for this?

Actually, the GCWR on a 1997 F250HD with a 5.8L/4.10 ratio is 13,000lbs. The reg cab 4x2 can tow up to 8000lbs. This is from the Ford F-series Heavy Duty/Super Duty book dated 09/96.

i was looking at our registration papers for it and it said 23K, didnt know if it was a typo or not. 23K is more than what the psd is supposed to tow.

Probably a typo. The 97 HD is a great truck and the 5.8L is fantastic, but not THAT great. The psd with 4.10 can do 20,000, On the 97 F-SuperDuty chassis, the psd with 5.13 it can do 22,000 and the 7.5L with 5.13 can do up to 26,000.

I don't have anything earlier than 97 actually. But the 92-97 HD's are all pretty close. For a 97 F350 4x2 crewcab 460 auto with 4.10, the GCWR was 18,000lbs and the max trailer weight was 10,000 lbs. In 1997, the 3.55 was not available on a 4x2 crewcab dually. The 3.73 wasn't available at all. You could get 3.55,and 4.10 on F250HD/350 and on the F-superduties 4.10, 4.63 and 5.13.

What you've got there is a truck that's registered with the state to tow a trailer with a combined truck/trailer weight of 23,000 lbs. This is standard practice. The state doesn't care what Ford's GVWR or GCVWR is; they only care what you register your vehicle for (and pay tax on).

That's why I have to laugh when people get all excited about Ford's ratings. Ford's numbers are mostly for warranty purposes, speaking in a legal sense. In many states you can register your truck for whatever you want. And here in Washington state you don't even have to pay for a higher registered weight if your trailer is for non-commercial personal use. So you can tow that 15,000 lbs fifth wheel RV and only have your truck registered for 8,000 lbs (not the 23,000 lbs you might think you need to register for).
