Angry trans problems

the transmission in my my 1997 f150 4 by4 4.6 auto just started to whine in first gear when i take off it also shudders when down shifting from 4 to 3d you can feel it dropping down at aboult 40mph at 70000kms any ideals it almost out of warrenty so before i bring it in has any one else had the same problems also when you have to air conditioning on i get fumes from cars in front of me and some times the air blows out the defrost for a few seconds instead of the vents .. control valve maybe it also pings when i put it in 4 high but gets 21.3 on the highway at 60mph ..a few bugs but one hell of a good truck

Has the fluid ever been changed??
The fumes are because on any setting except Max A/C, air is drawn in thru the cowl so any fumes that you drive thru, may be sucked in there.
I would check the vacuum line going to the vacuum canister in the passengerside fenderwell, I'll bet under hard acceleration is when it switches from the vents to defrost. If the line is cracked, the canister will not hold vacuum on the controls and when accelerating (the vacuum drops) the canister can not keep vacuum on them and the defrost position is the default position so that you can always keep the window clear.
I don't know why it would only ping when in 4x4.

I think that they might if you have the bumper to bumper extended warranty.

Fluid change isn't crucial on these transmisssion. Changed mine at 125k miles, all 14 quarts of it. Have 170k miles on it now on the second batch of trans fluid. Transmissions are contained systems, unlike an engine, there is no contamination coming in from the outside. If you use a very good fluid like Ford does, they are practically maintenance free.

Not from what I have read on here from many people.
Yes it is a closed system, but as clutches wear, the debris enters the fluid. Todays filters are more of a screen than a small micron filter. This debris gets into the valvebody and starts sticking valves. Todays valvebodys are alot more complicated these days with electronic shifting, lock up converters and OD. Every 30,000 to 35,000 miles is a good time to change it.

well i have to give the dealer in sudbury credit where its due they charged me 280.00 to get the engine lite off they said water got between the n 1 plug and wire so they cleaned it . put some desal greese on the plug .but wound not change the spark plug wire..they fixed the leaky oil cooler lines on both the engine and transmission.. they could not here any whine from the trans mission they said that was normal ..when i picked the truck up the interior lite was on ...so they also fixed the switch for the interior lite .. but broke the clips on the door panel . the clips are not replaceable . the panel is one piece . so now they have to replace that panel also ..and the sad part is i think they dont realy give a **** because they also treated several other peo ple there the same way as me . they also recomended i change the trans fluild at a cost of 250 bucks ..i just turned 70k on the truck ..and the warenty is now over . and thats the last time i will ever bring my truck back there ,..the sevice rep favorite words were.. oh thats not under warrenty thats not covered etc etc i just had the lube shop down the steet from the dealer .. change the trans oil and filter for 110 bucks ..a far cry from 250 plus tax ..
