my 96 explorer xlt 4wd 4.0 V6 gets nice mileage on the freeway compared to my old 5.0 capri, on a pure highway trip it got 18.6mpg. However, in city driving it gets around 11, why is my gas mileage suffering heavily in the city, this is not like san francisco traffic either, about a 50/50 mix of highway and city. any clues? never had a true fuel injected car so im dumbfounded. thank you for your time.
Check your air filter. It is located under the hood to the left, about the size of a piece of bread, with 2 latches that you just pull up and slide the cover out. Even after 2,000 miles you will notice it get a little dirty and lower mileage. It is cheap to replace, about $11.99 at Pep Boys. I found Purolater air filters (pep boys brand) gets better mileage and less restrictive than factory Motorcraft.
thats the first thing i did, got the oil changed because i dont know the last time that it was (just bought it) runs really good. Inflated the tires to their proper psi. its a higher mileage engine (140000)
The oil change and tire pressures were good ideas. Also the air filter like mustangsvt said. Do you know when the spark plugs and fuel filter were replaced? I would guess if it's running well the spark plug wires are OK. Might run some injector cleaner through it, couldn't hurt. Also, how many tankfulls have you been measuring the MPG over? You've probably already considered all this, but it's all I can think of offhand...
Forgot to mention one thing,, depends on your driving style also. I get about a straight 17mpg when driving really fast (ie. pedal-to-metal whole way),, then about 21mpg when driving normal. Thing is with my young years, i cant drive slow unless its snowing.
