Question Internal balance vs. external

What's the difference between internally and externally balanced flywheels/flexplates? How do you know which one you need and what will it hurt if you use the wrong one?

Internal balance does not have a Counterbalance weight on it, external does. It will have an awful vibration, and will definately hurt the motor if u use the wrong one.

It's still balanced either way though, right?

Yes it is, but say you want to change your setup later on ie... manual trans vs auto. You would have to have you whole rotoating assembly removed and redone to accept the flywheel. Flywheels are for manual trans, flexplate is for auto. If you look at the harmonic balancer there is a spacer behind it, the plain spacer is for internal balanced and one that has a wedge (shaped like a pie slice) is for external balance. The Balancer is actually interchangable if I am not mistaken. Back to the flex/fly's, if you look at the edges where the ring gear is you will notice counter weights welded on. The ammount and size of counterweights will dictate if it is internal or external balance.
