I may need to buy a new steering box for my new truck, and I think I want to go to manual steering. Has anyone ever heard of this on a 4X4 ('79, F250, D60)? I've seen 2WD boxes, but no 4X4. I converted both of my Galaxies to manual steering, I just like the simplicity of it. Plus, no one ever asks to drive 'em!!!
I'll give you my manual steering box! I am changing over to power steering because I can hardly turn the wheels with manual! Are you feeling ok? I can't see how anyone would want this.....
Thanks, 774X4, if it'll fit, I'll gladly take it. But, the little reseach I've done so far points out that my 250 box is different than the 150 box, at least for some years. If it fits, though, woo hoo!!!
Do you have big tires on yours? I wonder why it's so hard to steer?
Actually, I'm not done restoring my truck yet but when I got it, it sat for about eight years without moving so that may be part of the hard steering! It only has 31's on it right now but I'm putting on 35's on it so I deffinetly want power steering. I found the whole set up in a junkyard for $70 so I can't beat it!
When I bought my 75' I thought it was a little hard to steer with the manual steering. After getting use to it I am not really minding anymore. With manual steering there is less to go wrong up here in the cold weather. Power steering pumps squeal when they are cold (-40*). I am planning on changing the oil in the manual pump to a synthetic so that when the truck has been sitting in the cold the first few turns will be easier. With the dino oil in it when I first take off in below 0 temps I have to work the wheel back and forth a little to get it loosened up but after that it is fine. I have plowed a quite a bit of snow with the old truck this winter and that requires a quite a bit of maneuvering.
i had manual steering on my truck and in the woods it had a mind of its own. if there was a rut and the wheels fell in it would snap the steering around and if your thunmb was in the inside of the wheel it would take it off when it snaped around, in a parking lot there was no way you could ever turn the wheel without moving. i would never go without power steering on a truck. i had a car with manual steering and that was not to bad but a truck is different than a car
Especially while rock crawlin. My thumbs have never recovered. Real tough trying to balance a beer with one hand too, I mean soda. Stay with the Power steering! If you really feel you need to go manual, at least keep the power equipment to put it back on if you decide to sell your truck. Manual is a detourant for most all buyers and would also lower the value of the truck.
