Walbro fuel pump

I’m looking at putting a Walbro fuel pump on the truck. It only has one tank on it. My plan is a 190 lph pump. Any advice on the install and what part number did you use?

By fall time, I will be doing work to put me around 350 hp/tq range.

I’ve owned the truck 3.5ish and this is the 4th time I’ll be replacing the “lifetime warranty” pump. This time it left me stranded at a grocery store with my landscaping trailer!! I’m truly tired of this. Replacement warranty pump won’t come in until
this afternoon and I’m supposed to get two days of rain starting tonight. I had 7 more lawns to do!

Rant over…

Which pump are you going with? I've heard that they have some high volume in tank pumps out now that would probably be the way to go. I've got the GSL392BX pumps which are 255 lph. I haven't had one fail me in the 4 years that I have been running it, probably because I bought a couple of spares for just in case. Walbro suggests using a 100 micron pre filter, so I ended up with an Aeromotive 12319. Definitely, DO NOT waste money on a small prefilter. You will be constantly changing them when your engine starts leaning out.

In tank is my plan. I would love to just go with a rail pump if it would pull through the FDM without a problem.. I’m tired of dropping the tank! I was looking at the LMR kit for a mustang:

https://lmr.com/item/LRS-9350B/1986-...s242-Fuel-Pump

$10 more and I can do 255, but I didn’t feel like it was fully necessary. Maybe just say screw it and do the 255. Looking on their site, there are 3 types to choose from, all based on sock type/location on bottom pump.

I had a convo with the O Reilly manager and told them I was tired of changing it out so frequent and I lost most of my income for the day, potentially the week with the weather. I said I was going to swap to another fuel pump really soon. She actually said she agreed and was good with me returning the new one in the truck now for a full refund. If i go the Walbro route, I’ll need to go to a junkyard and get another fdm. That will still leave no money out of my pocket essentially.

O Reilly pump is $150
255 Walbro kit is $114. I can’t imagine a JY pump will be more than $30-40.

Anyone have a junk fdm for a front tank they want to part with?!

Going through the experience with a 'lifetime' warranty part from the big box stores is a real lesson learned. Preach to others about what the term 'lifetime' means. It's a lifetime of repairs done on the side of the road. This applies to starters, alternators, etc. It's just not worth it. Spend twice as much money for something that is good but only has a two year warranty.

The problem with used is they are old and fuel pumps tend to wear out vs break. The brushes in the electric motor tend to wear out which is why they just stop working. You could buy a used pump assembly and then swap the pump. I did that when I upgraded the rear pump to a larger 255lph pump.

You could do an early intank as it is a low pressure/low volume and feeds an inline...then pop a Walbro 255 inline down on the frame. Inlines push far better than pull.

No need to fart with that switch valve like I have on my 88.

That is my plan, swap the pump in the used unit. I looked for a motorcraft pump, but could not locate one for the 16 gallon midship. That’s why I went with lifetime vs cheaper 1 yr.

too bad you can’t just add a high volume to the older low pressure setups. I have been toying this idea as well. Easier to swap when it craps out.

True to form with the “lifetime warranty” crap. See pic below. The new o ring decided it wasn’t right for the job… Soo happy I could dump fuel on the ground at a clients house as their landscaper.. wasn’t caught yesterday as I only had 1/8 tank. Had to fill the mower and gas can so I filled the truck also and then went back at it.

Got the truck home, dropped tank and put old o ring back in. Problem solved..
